What is TBI?

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is caused by an outside force traumatically damaging the brain. Generally, TBI involves the following phases:

  • A primary injury results immediately from the initial trauma. It may include damage to blood vessels, a contusion or even shearing or stretching. The trauma immediately can kill brain cells.
  • A secondary injury develops slowly after the initial trauma, because of the trauma. It can result from complications such as lack of oxygen, increased or reduced blood flow, low blood pressure, pressure on the brain or swelling.

Because brain injuries are so complex, diagnosing them can be difficult. TBI victims often do not appear injured. While an open wound or other overt symptoms can indicate a TBI, in many cases, it may not be detected immediately, or it may be misdiagnosed.

Subtle signs of TBI are personality changes, reduced mental capacity or mood swings. It is vital to obtain a proper diagnosis.

Brain injuries are commonly caused by car accidents, truck accidents, bike accidents and motorcycle accidents, but medical malpractice, birth injuries, construction accidents and falls can also result in irreparable brain damage.
